Memorial Day 2024
One Road Open, Another Still Closed

Guardsman at the Top

You may or may not know that Guardsman Pass is opened up every year (unless there's a major problem) just before the Memorial Day weekend.

That is the case, once again, as it has just been opened up after another snowy winter.  This is one of our favorite scenic drives as you can tell if you read some of the articles on this site about it.

To see what UDOT has to say, go to Guardsman Pass is now open.

Another popular highway, the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, has not been opened yet.  You can see UDOT's video here at Mirror Lake Highway still closed

One thing about any of the major holidays ... especially the 3-day weekends ... in Utah.  You can do yourself a favor by staying home.  I know, I get it.  You have a little time.  You want to go places.  See things.  Travel a little.

The problem is that so does everybody else.  Every road going up every canyon on Friday is bumper to bumper from early afternoon to darkness.  And, on Monday, every canyon road coming back is the same.

Look at Spanish Fork Canyon here on Memorial Day.  Disgusting.  Any of the other roads are just as bad.  Parley's Canyon (I-80) is a carbon copy.  I'm still not sure where all these people are going to or coming from.  Doesn't seem like there's enough room up there for all of them.
