Burrowing owls

Hello

My wife and I were coming out to Salt Lake in May. We live in Maryland. We are avid birders but could not arrange our schedules to make the birding festival. We visited Antelope Island last year, and heard that there are burrowing owls nesting on the island.

This bird would be a lifer for us. Could you possibly direct us to where the nesting sites are? We would very much appreciate it. We look forward to visiting your area next spring.

Thanks

Hi Josh

The Antelope Island Naturalist ... Michelle Croft ... makes monthly submissions on my site during the non-winter months about Antelope Island.

She would be the best person to give you this information. Her e-mail address is:

michellecroft@utah.gov

Please contact her and let me know if you don't get your answer. Thanks for visiting my site.

Rod here again. It looks like Michelle is no longer the naturalist at Antelope Island.

I don't know much about Burrowing Owls but my reading says they can be difficult to locate from year to year. They often don’t seem to nest in the same burrow the next year. Where you see them one year may not be the place you see them the next year.

I suggest ... either before or when you get here ... you contact the state office overseeing Antelope Island. They can give you current information. Contact them at:

Antelope Island State Park

Syracuse, Utah 84075-6868
