It's a stunningly beautiful drive, but also quite dangerous. My husband and I took the drive in a Honda Accord. The road is paved most of the way up, but so poorly maintained that huge chunks of the road have broken off and fallen away into the canyon. In places the road was so narrow that we simply prayed that we didn't encounter another car coming from the opposite direction. There seemed to be a fair number of drivers on that road in big pickup trucks that were operating under the impression that the road is one-way, and would fly around the blind corners with total disregard for the possibility of any oncoming traffic.

Quite a bit of the Butterfield Canyon road is paved. At least at both ends. In good weather, you don't need a 4 x 4.
The road ... from the east side of the Oquirrhs ... starts just north of Herriman, goes over the top of the Oquirrhs, and then drops right down into Tooele.
